One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
